You are here: Symbian.
What is this?
This is a resource for software that works with Symbian based mobile phones. Generally this stuff works with FP 3rd devices. There might be some exceptions to this and in that case it will be noted. Everything listed here will work with at least Talks version 4.11.3 unless I mention otherwise. I don't use Mobile Speak except as a demo but it's fairly safe to assume that it does work with these programs unless I mention that it doesn't. I have a Nokia n86 and also a Nokia E5 and I regularly use many of these on those phones. I found myself uploading different software to Dropbox frequently and giving links to various people that had asked for this or that. I decided I really like being able to help, but let's make a webpage with all the stuff I encounter in one place. If you start out here in your quest to find something for your phone and you come up empty here, I highly recommend BlindSea.com. Likewise, should you know of a piece of software that you think deserves to be mentioned on this page and that isn't, feel more than welcome to mention it to me.
Note that it's possible programs listed here might not be the latest versions that can be gotten from the developer. If you happen to know a program listed here is out of date, you're more than welcome to email me and let me know about it so I can look into putting the latest version here. For now, I'm hosting local copies of all of these files. This makes it quite easy for you the visitor to come here and download something.
Symbian Software
Multimedia
This program is from: Sazpaimon.
Do you have a Symbian phone that lacks the often built in podcasting program, and wish it had it? Someone named Sazpaimon managed to take the program from a phone that did have it and put it together in an unsigned .SIS installer for distribution. I found out about this from Symbian-guru.com. My n86 phone already has this program so I can't test this to see if it works.
Note: I have done a podcast on this program. If you would like to listen to it, click here to download it.
Instant messaging, email, social networking, etc.
This program is from: fring.com
This is a multiprotocol messenger application that allows chatting and voice calling with MSN, AIM, Skype and more. This program works farely well for me with my E5 using talks 5.01.1.

This is a program that lets you use Skype from your Symbian phone. This is the last known accessible version. I never used it, so I don't know if it really is accessible or not. If I read rightly, one must pay for it after using it for a few days. Note that this program is sort of pointless now that one can use Skype's own Skype software. Interestingly though, this software works by placing a regular phone call, so if I'm not mistaken it uses minutes instead of data.

This is multi protocol, letting you connect to MSN and Aim at least. I haven't used this either so I don't know what all it does do. Similar to the one above, this program is the last that is known to be accessible. Again I don't know if it really is accessible or not.
This program is from: tweets60.com.
This is one of the twitter clients that runs on Symbian devices. It is pretty nice in my opinion, letting you follow or un follow someone in addition to reading your timeline, your direct messages, your mentions, your sent tweats and your favorites. There have been many updates since I started using it, each bringing some welcome changes. It works well for me with my n86 using talks 4.11.3 and my E5 using talks 5.01.1. It does not work with Mobile Speak 4.0. I tested it myself. It might work with newer versions of mobile speak though.
This program is from: m.emoze.com.
This one is an email client that lets you have push email. For those who have inaccessible email clients on their phones this program just might save the day. I have this exact version installed from the same file installed on my n86 and it works excellently with talks. I've heard it doesn't work so great with Mobile Speak, it might be worth a try though. It works well for me with my n86 using talks 4.11.3. I haven't tested it yet with Mobile Speak.
Note: I have done a podcast on this program. If you would like to listen to it, click here to download it.
This program is from: Skype.
This is the official skype 1.01 6 for Symbian right from the skype folks themselves. This is the non touch screen version. I neglected to put the actual Skype program itself up here at first because it wasn't very stable, but now that I'm having good luck with this version of Skype's Symbian version I'm putting it up here. This program works well for me on my N86 with Talks 5.00.3. I don't know if it works with Mobile Speak. I haven't heard anyone complaining that it doesn't.
Hotspot Creators
This program is from: JoikuSoft Oy.
This is the free version of Joiku Spot. It allows you to share your phone's Internet connection with devices like your computer by creating a WiFi hotspot, similar to a wireless router. The free version is limited to just browsing the web. It won't let you do some of the things that you might want to do. See below if you want full functionality. This program works well for me on my n86 with talks 4.11.3, and I know it works with Mobile Speak at least version 4.
Note: Adriano and I have done a podcast on the premium version of this program. If you would like to listen to it, click here to download it.
This program is from: JoikuSoft Oy.
This is the premium version of Joiku spot. See above for an explanation of what Joiku Spot is. It lets you try it for two days with full functionality and then you have to pay to continue using it. Using this, you can check email, download and upload files, talk on Skype, run Dropbox and even connect to mud games from your computer. I gather this version lets you do anything you could do with an ordinary Internet connection. I for one haven't ran into anything that just plain doesn't work. This program works well for me on my n86 with talks 4.11.3, and I know it works with Mobile Speak at least version 4.
Note: Adriano and I have done a podcast on the premium version of this program. If you would like to listen to it, click here to download it.

BT Switch is a tiny little program that toggles Bluetooth on and off. Just install it and press select on the program from the menu and Bluetooth will immediately be toggled. Works great for me with my n86. Accessibility doesn't apply since the program doesn't have an interface. When you press select on it nothing appears to happen (no windows appear or anything) but Bluetooth is toggled.

This is a fantastic FTP client. I was able to get it to actually connect through FTP to my website and upload the .SISX file that is linked above to the site right from the downloads folder on my phone! I really love this program. It has two tab sheets, one for the local files and one for the remote. It feels like Win SCP if any of you have used that. It works well for me with my n86 using talks 4.11.3. I haven't tested it yet with Mobile Speak.

This is a pretty useful little program that will let you self sign installation files for programs that are unsigned or who's certificates may be out of date. It works well for me with my n86 using talks 4.11.3. I haven't tested it yet with Mobile Speak.

This little application consists of a clock, a timer, a stopwatch and a multiple recurrence-supporting alarm system. It uses four different tab sheets and is really fairly simple to work with. It works well for me with my n86 using talks 4.11.3. I haven't tested it yet with Mobile Speak.
Symbian Drivers
This driver is from: http://tech.aph.org/rbd_info.htm
This is a braille driver provided by APH for Talks to interface with their Refresha Braille 18, a braille display that they sell. I have discovered that this driver works with my Brailliant32 display and talks 5.01.1 on my Nokia E5. Install the driver, restart the phone for good measure, then go to the talks window and choose the braille tab. Hit select on the braille display to open that, change it to Talks Braille Enterface and press select again. The phone will prompt you to locate the Bluetooth display. Do your normal stepps to pair with your display, and you should be good to go. Note that the phone shut down talks on me when I installed this driver, so wait a good minute, maybe press key1 a time or two, but not too many times because you might start the installation all over again after you are landed back in the list of installers. When you think you're pretty sure it's done installing just hold down your phone's power button to turn it off, then turn it back on. My E5 doesn't have a power button, so I have to press end a couple of times, then hold down the end key for a while.
